What They Didn’t Teach You In Your Doctorate:
January 4 – 5, 2025 (online)
What didn’t you learn in graduate school?
By now you’ve probably run across some situations that weren’t on your comprehensive exam. For example:
- Do you have students who don’t want to work but do want to complain to the dean about their grades?
- Are you being undermined by a graduate assistant?
- Will you be traveling off campus with student participants?
- Have you been hired to teach a subject that you’ve barely even studied?
- Do your students resent your hire because they adored their previous teacher or wanted the committee to pick someone else?
- Will graduation day leave massive personnel holes in a group that you’re expected to coach?
- Are you at work for fourteen hours on a regular basis but earning so little that you can barely cover your bills?
- Are you holding out for a spousal hire and feeling pressure to leave if it doesn’t come through?
- Do you come back from weekends or breaks without feeling refreshed?
- Are you struggling to find time for professional activity other than teaching?
- Have you started to wonder if this job is really what you ought to be doing?
